The Italian Ecommerce triples, the South drives growth

According to InfoCamere and Unioncamere data in Italy, more than 20 thousand companies use Internet as a showcase for their products. A number that has tripled in the last 10 years, with an average annual growth of 24%.

In short, more and more companies are resorting to the web to present and sell their products, a direct consequence of the contraction found in the number of businesses dealing with retail trade that within nine years (from 2009 to 2018) has waned by as many as 16400 units . Electronic commerce could therefore be considered as the antidote against the crisis that has poured over Italian companies, which have seen their revenues swallowed up by giants like Amazon.

Leading the change, this time it are the regions of the South that have made E-commerce a winning strategy. The regions that have grown the most in this area, besides the usual tenacious and innovative Lombardy (+2.634 units), Campania is the surprise of this research, (+2,018 units) and a solid Lazio closes the top three (+1.555 units).

The data show a positive attitude of renewal adopted by the regions of the South that are not discouraged by the big US and European e-commerce companies and also the regions of northern Italy, which have always been considered the breakthrough tips on the innovation channels.

Italians' interest in the world of digital purchases and e-commerce doesn’t seem to be sidelined in the regional borders of the peninsula. The survey shows that this propensity towards digital has spread like wildfire across the entire nation and the choice to empty stores and commercial galleries and then make them reappear, as if by magic, in the world wide web, could revolutionize consumer traditions of the whole country.
