Increasing digital payments to the PA

As shown in the survey conducted by YouTrend on behalf of the coalition, 65% of Italians have tried at least once to make a payment to the public administration. A figure destined to increase if only the use of PagoPa had increased: this is an electronic payment system created to make any payment by citizens to the Public Administration easier, safer and more transparent.

From the latest updates it seems that this growth has finally happened. There have been 4 million and 682 thousand transactions in the last quarter of 2018 and other 7 million and 425 thousand transactions only in the first 40 days of 2019, with the prevision to close the first two months of the year having about 10 million transactions.

The payment of car tax and fines is driving the growth. From January 1, more than 60% of car tax payments in Italy took place through PagoPA (in 2020 they will be all), as well as an increasing number of Municipalities (including Rome and Milan) that choose PagoPA to manage in a way effective payment of traffic fines. Furthermore, from June, all notices of the IRS will pass through the platform.

Data show a double-digit growth compared to 2016, the year in which the platform had begun to take its first steps, when only 900 thousand transactions transited per year on PagoPA.

The credit for this sudden increase can be found in the decline of consumer distrust of new electronic payment instruments. This is a real change on the part of consumers who no longer consider these new tools as a problem to be managed or a cost to sustain, but as an opportunity.
